Episode 17: Yuu
Yuu had something I didn't have back then.
The social skill to get along with anyone, a passion for food, a passion for fashion.
Those three traits of his were what drew me in.
As for me — I had no interest in anything but music, I came across as intimidating, the only food I knew was Italian, and my clothes were strictly black. A total metalhead.
Since I loved Italian food, he took me to Goemon, a wafu-Italian pasta spot on Spain-zaka in Shibuya. That was about 28 years ago now.
I was blown away by the fusion of Japanese and Italian back then — who knew natto and pasta could work together.
Yuu was only a year older than me, but he seemed way older.
When it came to fashion, places like Trans Continents and Beams in Harajuku were stores I never would have set foot in, genres I never would have known, if I hadn't gone shopping with him.
Around that time, I had a chance to drink with some older women who worked at a certain public broadcaster, where Yuu had a part-time job. When I talked about my own music, one of them said, "Hmm, sounds like your life hasn't even started yet" — I still remember being talked down to like that.
Yuu really was popular...
As for my music, though...
To be continued.
